How to join
the Storm

Four things stand between a new player and the first practice. None of them are hard. Work through them in order and you'll be on the roster.

The sequence

Start here

Step one has to happen before anything else — the league can't roster a player who isn't a USA Lacrosse member, because that membership is what carries the team's insurance.

Join USA Lacrosse

USA Lacrosse is the national governing body, and membership is mandatory for every player in the league. Register the player — not the parent — and keep the confirmation number somewhere you can find it again.

  • Roughly $35 per year for high school players.
  • Players 18 and under must complete a one-time age verification within 15 days of joining.
  • Membership has to stay active through the end of May. If it lapses mid-season, the whole team's coverage lapses with it.

Register for the season

Season registration runs through the same USA Lacrosse account, on the Owyhee club page. Log in first, then open the event — the page won't let you register until you're signed in.

Fall 2026 is open now, but not for long. Registration closes August 31, $295 per player. Practice runs 4:30–6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 18 through October. It's lower intensity than spring and built around developing players, so it is the best possible place to start if you have never played.

  • Fees cover league dues, officials, coaching, field time and uniforms.
  • Register early so we can order a uniform and set aside a loaner helmet in the right size.
  • Cost should never be the reason a kid doesn't play. Tell us and we'll handle it.

Clear the paperwork

Because lacrosse is a club sport rather than a school-sanctioned one, the requirements come from the league rather than the district. Expect a current sports physical at minimum.

  • A sports physical dated within the current school year.
  • Any waivers the league or club asks for at registration.
  • Good standing at school — grades still matter to these coaches.

If you are unsure what applies to your son, ask a coach before you chase down forms you may not need.

Get geared up

We provide the game uniform and we loan out helmets, so the two most expensive items are already handled. Everything else is the player's, and we keep a stock of loaner equipment for anyone starting from zero. Talk to a coach before you spend a dollar.

The club owns the helmets and loans them out. Six red chrome for varsity, six white for JV. Twelve in total, first come — if your player needs one, register early and tell us his size.

  • A NOCSAE-certified chest protector. This one you buy — we don't loan them.
  • Shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves, mouthguard, cup.
  • Cleats and a stick. Goalies need a throat guard and goalie stick — see a coach first.

LAXID in the Treasure Valley is the local shop and the club's gear supplier. They know what a first-year player actually needs versus what looks good on a wall.

Questions we get every year

Before you ask

My son has never played. Is it too late?

No. Lacrosse in Idaho picks up most of its players in high school, and a freshman who can run and take coaching catches up inside a season. Wall ball in the driveway does more than anything else in the first year.

What does a season cost, all in?

Fall 2026 is $295 per player, plus the USA Lacrosse membership at roughly $35 a year. Helmets are loaned, uniforms are provided, so the rest is pads, gloves, a stick and cleats. Lacrosse is not school-sanctioned, so the club receives no taxpayer funding at all — season fees are set after sponsorships are counted, which is exactly why sponsors matter. Scholarships are available and used every season.

Can he play another spring sport too?

Talk to us early. Conflicts happen with track and baseball, and we would rather build a practice plan around a two-sport athlete than lose him.

When are tryouts and the first practice?

Fall practice runs 4:30–6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 18 through October. Spring runs March through May, with conditioning in the back half of winter. Get registered first — practice dates go out to registered families before they go anywhere else.

Do we have to buy a helmet?

No. The club owns twelve — six red chrome for varsity and six white for JV — and hands them straight to players. There are more players than helmets in a good year, so register early. If you would rather own one, a coach will tell you what to look for before you spend anything.

Is there a girls team?

This site covers the boys program. Reach out and we'll point you to the right contact for girls lacrosse in the valley.
